Meet "Tree House Terry", Terry Michael Weaver from Maui and his Encinitas Tributes

Maui-Mon blog #1 Jan, 2014

The thriving art community is growing in Encinitas and connections reach across the ocean to the island of Maui,  In steps  a transplanted local Encinitas artist and a connection with the city - and the journey begins. Meet "Tree Top Terry", “Terry Michael Weaver”- "Mosaic Mon", Artist and Musician.

He has made mosaics since the early 70's, and since that time has made over 100 mosaics, including: City mosaics; Hotel, and Condo mosaics; Restaurant, and Private Estate mosaics. Five of my more intricate mosaics can be seen at E Street C@fe Encinitas, and while you're there say 'hi' to Dominic!

Twenty of his public mosaics adorn the City sidewalks of Encinitas, in April 2001 he won the City of Encinitas, Commission for the Arts, Downtown Streetscape project competition. The proposal was for the artist to design and manufacture 16 medallions to be laid, each side of the sidewalk, along Highway 101 from D St. to F St., receiving approval, he began the task of designing and installing each 36" round mosaic for our beautiful City. Seven months later, upon completion of all 16 mosaics, the City of Encinitas won a Great American Street Award.

"There are a host of people he owes a great deal of thanks too during his mosaic journey with Encinitas. Terry will be addressing these people in a monthly blog with "ArtBuzz" , thanks to Cheryl  I will be telling the trials and tribulations - past and present, of being a mosaic artist".

The "Mosaic Mon" blog would not be complete without excerpts from the current art studio at the beach-side tree-house residence on the Lindsey estate at Polanui, "Shark Pit" Maui.. Yes he lives in a tree house on the beach with private sunsets- beautiful vistas in a surf and sun paradise.

“I am so excited about my new "Marine Mosaic" series, which will include 24 glass-tile L.E.D lit mosaics.  Amazing.  are the creatures of our oceans.  With my "Ocean Wellness" program I will interface with local Hawaii biologists to create an educational platform to better understand why we need to make more effort to preserve our oceans. Next month, he will review the ebb-and-flow of being an artist, providing the daunting task of manufacturing 16 medallion mosaics for the City of Encinitas, and include more Maui updates.

And to add to that, he created the 25th Silver Anniversary mosaic, City Seal which will be installed early this year. Keep a lookout for unveiling information coming soon!!!

"A special thanks to Dody Crawford of DEMA, Jim Gilliam and Cheryl Ehlers of the City of Encinitas for promoting the lively Art Community filled with talented Encinitas Artists".

Visit www.mosaicmon or email Terry if you can find him on the beach…. at mosaicmon@gmail.com.

More next month......

Calling All Artists to the 2014 ArtWalk - Old California Resturant Row

OLD CALIFORNIA RESTAURANT ROW - 2014 ArtWalk

1st Sunday of Each Month 10:00am-2:00pm, March through October, 2014.

You are invited to be part of the 2014 ArtWalk!

The ArtWalk at Old California Restaurant Row in San Marcos is a monthly, outdoor art walk for fine artists, community art-based organizations as well as local aspiring art students. Fine artists are invited to participate in the monthly 2014 ArtWalk held on the first Sunday of each month, March-October, 2014 from 10:00am -2:00pm at the Old California Restaurant Row.

In an effort to bring you more foot traffic, the ArtWalk will now nestle between the Car Show and the Farmers Market! The new layout also offers more space for vendors with tents. On that note, for those of you who depended on the shade of the courtyard, I highly recommend picking up your own tent/umbrella for the 2014 event.

The other change to 2014 is that there will now be a $10 fee to set up. You will see the effects of this fee in more signage and more PR. The goal is to help drive more business your way!

Please complete the entry forms and return with visual examples to Raziah Roushan at contact@raziahroushan.com or by mail to 1192 Sunset Drive, Vista, CA 92081. We look forward to having you at the ArtWalk.

Gypsy Bride - paintings by Raziah Roushan, Solana Beach City Hall, CA. JAN 6 - FEB 15

Gypsy Bride, a series of oil paintings by Raziah Roushan.  The Gypsy Bride on exhibit at the Solana Beach City Hall Gallery, January 6 – February 15, 2014.

In an age were ceremony is dictated by the undertones of modern culture, the exhibition, Gypsy Bride by Raziah Roushan asks the viewer to reexamine the heart of matrimony. In a series of oil paintings, presented as a cubist exploration, Roushan juxtaposes iconographic symbols of white picket fences, blown-out candles, turning cogs and toads alongside lanky bride-inspired figures to weave into each painting the series’ hypothesis – “What is the real cost of marriage? Not the financial cost, but the compromise given up or gained by the commitment. What is the life cost of being in a committed relationship?” Gypsy Bride is a vibrant series, full of harmonious color and symbolism that speak to viewers of all ages and backgrounds.

Artist, Raziah Roushan has a history of creating works that require viewer response. Her body of works include “Does Your Freedom Come Gold Plated, 005-1, How Trustworthy is your Health Insurance, and Ya, I Said It.” Many of Roushan’s inspirations hinge between social and political commentary, under the technical finesse of a classically trained hand and eye. Roushan holds a Bachelor’s in Fine Art and a Master’s degree in Art Administration. Gypsy Bride is the kind of show that will have people talking.

Closing reception Feb. 13, 2014 from 5:30-7:30pm, Ciity of Solana Beach, City Hall Gallery. 635 South Highway 101, Solana Beach, CA 92075.
