CALL FOR 2 Encinitas Artist Commissions

 The City of Encinitas Environmental Commission is pleased to announce its new Environmental Award Program (EAP). This program recognizes and congratulates individuals, organizations, and businesses in the city for exceptional environmental achievements. The award winners in each of the two categories will receive an award crafted by an Encinitas artist.

2 Artist Commissions:

Artists who live in Encinitas are sought to submit proposals for environmentally-themed artwork. Proposal guidelines are available online, on the city website: www.encinitasca.gov/envawards. An art jury will select two artists for commissions of $500 for each award. Thus, the EAP not only raises environmental awareness, but it also supports the local arts community.

Deadline to Apply:  Your proposal must be received by Thursday, July 23, 5:00 pm.

About The Environmental Award Program:

The Encinitas EAP will present two awards annually, one for individuals or nonprofit
organizations, and one for businesses. Candidates are peer-nominated and must be
Encinitas residents or located in Encinitas. Winners will be selected by a jury of
recognized environmental leaders. Candidates may be nominated as late as September 17 online, on the city website.

The EAP is administered by the City's Environmental Commission. Matching funds have been generously donated by the Surfing Madonna Oceans Project. Surfing Madonna holds its popular 5K, 10K and 10-Mile runs at Moonlight Beach on October 24, and has granted EAP stage time for its award ceremony. Surfing Madonna ("Save the Ocean") and the EAP are closely aligned in their goals. The Encinitas EAP is the first award of its kind in San Diego County, and is one of few in the United States.

“New Works” collection by iconic Fallbrook artist Brett Stokes at ArtBeat on Mainstreet

ArtBeat on Main Street Gallery in historic downtown Vista is delighted to debut the “New Works” collection by iconic Fallbrook artist Brett Stokes. After a June 20th opening reception, the exhibit runs through July 12th.

This man of multiple lineages, including Native American; multiple talents, including a line of cowboy-tinged greeting cards and hometown public art murals; multiple awards; and an ever-evolving artistic vision, has been called “an enigma.” But Stokes says his underlying mission is clear: “My creations are a portrayal of my own inner life: Chaos, Beauty, Fear, Balance, Peace.”

The exhibit marks Stokes’ second ArtBeat collaboration. ArtBeat Owner Kait Matthews says, “It is an honor to display Brett’s work. This exhibit is a departure from his 2014 Tahitian-inspired collection, but everything this intuitive artist creates is bold, revealing and simultaneously highly personal and spiritually universal.”

Stokes says that is precisely what he is striving to communicate. “For simplicity’s sake, I call the exhibit ‘New Works,’ but it could be titled ‘Semblance’ because each painting represents something that both is and is not what it appears on the surface to be. In creating these pieces, I decided to make myself happy by exploring and experimenting; painting what I liked and changing what I didn’t like. At its core, each piece is a quest and celebration of what it means to be human.”

ArtBeat on Main Street co-op gallery and wine lounge is located at 330 Main Street in downtown Vista. It is open Tuesday, 11:00am- 8:00pm, Wednesday–Saturday, 11:00am-9:30pm, and Sunday, Noon-4:30pm.

Carlsbad ArtSplash 2015 … A September to Remember! Sept. 26/27, 2015

Carlsbad ArtSplash 2015 … September 26: 10 am-6 pm September 27: 10 am-5 pm, Armada Drive, between Cannon & Palomar Airport Roads.

3D chalk art soaring magically from the pavement while a merry moving sculpture transforms spectators into parade participants: Armada Drive overlooking the picturesque Pacific will come alive with colorful, vibrant, nonstop arts and entertainment at ArtSplash 2015.

The September 26-27 ArtSplash Chalk Art and Entertainment Festival offers free parking and admission, and two full days of art-viewing, art-making, music, food and family fun under the Carlsbad sun. Proceeds benefit arts and music programs in North San Diego County schools.

Renowned artist-performers Tracy Lee Stum, Fern Street Circus, Gerry Kirk, Euphoria Brass Band and other high-energy favorites complement professional museum-quality paintings and imaginative kids’ chalk art squares created right on the street while spectators marvel.

The place to see, be seen and be part of the scene is ArtSplash 2015 – taking creativity not just to the next level, but to an arts-adventurous new dimension.  It’s sure to be … A 3D-lightful September to Remember!

Vivid Views – paintings by Cathy Carey at Encinitas City Hall - Reception June 12 - 5-7pm

At the “Vivid Views” show, Cathy Carey will be displaying works from several series of colorful California scenes.

The reception will be June 12 from 5 to 7pm.  Her current series includes native animals like owls, bobcats, quail, coyotes and fox, many of which she has seen on her one acre property on a high hill overlooking Lake Hodges. She says,“I love painting the animals I see in the area, we are all part of the interdependent pattern of our shared coexistence.” From bright mid day, sunset, twilight, and the dark sky, she sees these animals, and draws inspiration to paint them in their natural state.

The paintings that will be displayed include costal, and inland scenes. For example, in one of her featured paintings, “Swami’s Agave” you’ll see the surf of Encinitas and an agave in the foreground. An interesting thing about this painting and a few others, is that she paints words in, relating to the image. In the waves hitting the shore you’ll be able to spot the word “swami’s” disguised as a darker shade in the wave. This is a personal touch Carey has been applying to her paintings recently. In another painting, “Surf Sup”, with it’s clever name relating to supper, you’ll see a Pelican flying over the coast, of the Encinitas Beaches to find it’s next meal.

The Contemporary Expressive Colorist style of Cathy Carey is a blend of impressionist brush strokes, vivid expressive color and symbolic images that impart a sense of emotion and mood. Cathy Carey’s oil paintings are more than the reality of description and instead create images that feel joyous and exhilarating because of their bright and invigorating colors. She says, “I want to create movement in my compositions so I combine colors and shapes to make it feel like the pulse between the music and dancers. I paint scenes of places that I love, the California coast and inland North County is one of the most beautiful places in the world.”

333’s Music at the OMA with the rockin’ sounds of the Bayou Brothers - June 25, 7-9pm

Join Oceanside Museum of Art (OMA) and 333 Pacific Restaurant for another exciting 333’s Music at the Museum. The Bayou Brothers will be rockin’ OMA with the Louisiana flavors of Zydeco, Blues, R&B and that great Mardi Gras sound! Their extensive experience and endless enthusiasm deliver a rousing musical collage all packed into dazzling showmanship! Along with an evening of lively musical entertainment, guests will enjoy an open-air cocktail format with plenty of delicious gourmet appetizers, desserts and specialty wines served throughout the evening.

SAN DIEGO DREAMING, L Street Fine Art Gallery - Reception June 6th - 6-9pm

Rita Shulak one of 30 San Diego Artists Interpret the "California Dream"

L Street Fine Art is proud to partner with Oceanside Museum of Art (OMA) in presenting San Diego Dreaming – dual exhibitions featuring the artwork of San Diego artists at both venues.

In complement to California Dreaming: An International Portrait of Southern California, which traveled to Italy in 2014 and remains on display at OMA through March 29, 2015, the two partnering San Diego Dreaming exhibitions showcase a total of seventy San Diego-based artists and their highly individualized interpretations of the “California Dream”. 

Rita is a juried artist who has won first place in several major art competitions. Her painting styles include pointillism, palette knife, brush, finger painting, washes, dry brush and glazes. “I’m a continual student focusing on new designs and techniques of the masters and learning how to free my spirit into a right brain experience. Color is my passion in painting. I love my paintings to have texture, rhythm,  and a luxurious composition. My paintings are heartfelt, and bright."

Corresponding to its international forerunner, the San Diego Dreaming exhibition at the L Street Fine Art Gallery is composed of original contemporary works by 30 San Diego artists that creatively interpret Southern California’s iconic culture. The exhibition at L Street Fine Art includes artists: Rebecca Bauer, Bre Custodio, Paula Des Jardins, Richard Dowdy, Amber Foote, Helen Shafer Garcia, Amber George, Ken Goldman, Jim Hornung, Mark Jesinoski, Kirby Kendrick, Sherry Krulle-Beaton, Margaret Larlham, Robert Avon Lees, Anita Lewis, Shuang Li, Chris Martino, Glen Maxion, Connie McCoy, Joe Nalven, Diane O’Connell, Robyn Oliver, Robert Pendleton, Robin Raznick, RD Riccoboni, Julianne Ricksecker, Rita Shulak, Julie Ann Stricklin, Michael Taylor, Rosemary Valente.  The exhibit runs March 30 - June 30, 2015.

June 5th, Notes & Pixels Offers Full Sensory Delights at ArtBeat in Vista

A musical and visual celebration will joyfully explode onto the vibrant Vista scene on the evening of June 5, 2015 when ArtBeat on Main Street Gallery and Wine Lounge at 330 Main Street presents Notes & Pixels, starring the folk-and-blues singer-songwriting duo of Coco and Lafe amid the stunning photography of new ArtBeat member Kristin Albright of Jam’n Photos. 

Tickets are $10 in advance at www.cocolafe.com/events/notes-pixels/ and, on a space-available basis, $15 at the door. Seating is cabaret-style, creating a warm, intimate setting for the original songs and tight harmonies of the duo lauded as “premier American songwriters you should hear live.

” Before and after the concert, guests can mingle with Albright and view her photography exhibit while enjoying a glass of wine or craft beer plus light fare and browsing the Gallery’s ever-changing panorama of diverse, reasonably priced pieces produced by local artists. Before joining together in 2007, Coco and Lafe each amassed a popular following, performed with artists such as Doc Watson and Tanya Tucker, were featured in entertainment publications, garnered appearances on shows such as Conan O’Brien and won multiple awards. As a duo, they have released six CDs and headlined the 2012 national Get Fresh tour of farmers’ markets sponsored by Real Time Farms to promote buying locally and eating healthfully. They eagerly look forward to seeing longtime and new fans at what Lafe calls “an incredible venue – love the vibe!”
