AMERICAN CLASSIC TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD COMES TO LIFE ONSTAGE AT NEW VILLAGE ARTS

CARLSBAD, CA - New Village Arts, Carlsbad’s award-winning theatre company, continues lucky Season 13 with the American Classic TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD directed by Executive Artistic Director Kristianne Kurner and company member Justin Lang. Based on Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel, this adaptation by Christopher Sergel brings to life the timeless tale of innocence, justice, inequality, compassion, and growing up through the memories of a now-adult Scout (played by Kurner). TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD tells the story of Scout, a wide-eyed girl living in the South during the Great Depression with her brother Jem and her widowed-father Atticus Finch. When Atticus, a lawyer, courageously defends a black man accused of rape, Scout, Jem and their friend Dill are faced with the issues of loss of innocence and moral integrity.

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD at New Village Arts features Kristianne Kurner as Jean Louise Finch (adult Scout), Manny Fernandes as the iconic Atticus Finch, Katelyn Katz as Scout, Dylan Nalbandian as Jem and Matthew Mohler as Dill. The rest of the Artistic Ensemble includes: Kathi Copeland, Yolanda Franklin, Lauren King, Justin Lang, Max Macke, David Macy-Beckwith, Durwood Murray, Walter Murray, Eric Poppick, and James Winkler. This production features a Set Design by Tim Wallace, Properties Design by Kacia Castelli, Costume Design by Mary Larson, Original Sound Design by Bill Bradbury, and Lighting Design by Sherrice Kelly.

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD is in pay-what-you-can previews from April 4 - 11, 2014. Opening night is April 12, 2014 and closing is May 4, 2014. Tickets begin at $22.00 and are currently on-sale online at www.newvillagearts.org, and by calling or visiting the box office at 760.433.3245 or 2787 State Street, Carlsbad, CA 92008.

“The anguish of racial injustice and the maddening psychology of racism ensure that "To Kill a Mockingbird" will remain a story worth telling.” - The Salt Lake Tribune

“The emphasis is on story-telling itself, and the audience is invited, indeed required, to bring its own imagination to the production.” - The London Telegraph

Sargent Art Group Arrives In Vista Opening Reception - April 12, 1-4pm

Sargent Art Group Arrives In Vista

The Sargent Art Group will present its inaugural art exhibit entitle “Local Sights, Local Color” at the Rancho Buena Vista Adobe Gallery in Vista from April 3 until May 3. A Meet the Artist reception with food, drinks and music will be held on April 12 from 1 to 4 pm at the gallery located 640 Alta Vista Way, Vista, California. You will want to attend this reception.

Works that explore a wide range of styles in oil, acrylic, watercolor, photography and three-dimensional pottery, glass and fiber art will be showcased. Sargent Art Group, named number one in North San Diego County in 2013, is composed of both professional, emerging artists and patrons of the arts. The group was founded by the late J. McNeil Sargent an internationally recognized artist who traced her roots to painters John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) and James McNeil Whistler (1834-1903).

The Rancho Buena Vista Adobe is one of the best preserved of the San Diego County land grant Ranchos, deeded in 1845. The entire facility imparts a sense of history and an aura of the romance of early California. In 1989 the City of Vista purchased the property across the street from the new Vista Civic Center Complex and Library. The Adobe gallery was once the Casitas for the parents of the owners. It’s open from 10-3pm Thursday through Saturday. The Gallery is located at 640 Alta Vista Way, in Vista. From the 78, exit Civic Center Drive Northbound and follow it to Alta Vista Drive. Turn Right on Alta Vista Drive.  Free parking in the City Hall lot on the right. Cross Alta Vista drive and enter the Iron Gates to the Gallery.

Tree Top Terry in Maui a former Encinitas local Artist

Promised and delivered from Maui, Treetop "Terry Weaver" is sharing his story of Encintas, CA and his artwork in the City.  Tales from the Tree House -
Cont. from January; Mosaic Mon, Terry Michael Weaver.Encinitas – Subject Streetscape 2001 Award “The Story”.

Back in March, 2001, while visiting family and friends in Encinitas, I ran into a good friend and then Arts Commissioner, Thomas Soto. Tommy mentioned to me that the City of Encinitas was looking for local artists for the Downtown Encinitas Streetscape project. The Arts Commission wanted to incorporate public art into the street improvement project to make it more interesting. Tommy said, “they should have your mosaics downtown.” He directed me to city hall where I obtained specifications for the art –(16) 36” round medallion to be placed at specific locations. I took this very seriously as both my youth and my heart are rooted in Encinitas. The Downtown Encinitas Streetscape project offered me an opportunity to give something creative back to my hometown. I had only three days to prepare my presentation to the City Council. I had learned the importance of a good presentation while working in architectural firms, so I spent the entire three days preparing. I made 2 images: a horse jumping a gate and a classic Woodie. I printed them to actual size as requested on the spec sheet. I also included a real mosaic which was hung in our family’s dome house- a 2” round lion tile mosaic that I had made back in the early 80’s. I waited patiently as I was the last name in the competition to be called. I proposed that each of the 16 medallions would depict different aspects of the city. I then rolled out the 2 full size images and displayed my round mosaic lion.

The Council was able to have a true visual of the actual sized art for the medallions. The votes followed and I was awarded the medallion project. I was excited and a little nervous. Reality was, that not only was I a commissioned artist, I was part of a major street renovation project that impacted the businesses on Highway 101. I realized how daunting 16 different image mosaics would be to design, manufacture and to also keep pace with the City’s construction schedule.

Meanwhile back  at home: The Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational (MPAPI) is a weeklong art event held every February in Lahaina on Maui, Hawaii. The MPAPI event is a great event where the public can watch professional plein air painters create their artistic visions of Maui, its people, the landscape, and historical buildings. Terry’s tree house is always a popular subject and this year no fewer than 5 of the 25 showcased artists chose this unique setting as their subject.

Next month: the Art Council and process of creating 16 pieces of art begins
