Cheryl Ehlers: A Retrospective, Nov, 23, 6pm

Many times over the years I've looked at a piece I've made and thought to myself, I can't remember doing that.' One remembers only traces of what happened. In that sense one main function of the art work is that it is an artifact of the process.

The more difficult task has been to consider what it's all been about. My own belief as an artist is that much of what I do (the art making part, that is) happens in a kind of trance, or mental zone. There is a notion that it is through the channel of a person that creativity flows and significant art making happens. In that regard, it is much like art choosing the person rather than the person choosing to be an artist. Indeed, I don't really remember ever making the decision to become a painter, I found myself being one.

Join me for Cheryl Ehlers: A Retrospective, exhibiting: November 6 - Jan 6, 2020.

Reception: Saturday, Art Night, November 23, 6-9pm at the Encinitas Library: 540 Cornish Drive, 92024. FREE

Calling All Artists: The “Berry” Best Poster Contest Has Arrived, Vista, CA

Calling All Artists: The “Berry” Best Poster Contest Has Arrived!

Vista, CA … Artists looking to demonstrate their good taste and delicious artistry need look no farther than the Vista Strawberry Festival Poster Contest sponsored for the fourth consecutive year by ArtBeat on Main Street Gallery and Wine Lounge, 330 Main Street, Vista. Contest guidelines are simple: art should reflect the “flavor and spirit” of the annual Strawberry Festival, which takes place this year on May 29, 2016. Information and applications are at http://artbeatonmainstreet.com/strawberry-poster-contest-info/.

The entry deadline is 5 pm on May 6, 2016. The top three pieces will be displayed at ArtBeat on May 20, 2016, when the winners will be announced and cash prizes ($250, first place; $175, second; $100, third; $25, people’s choice) awarded. The first-place artwork will be featured on the poster and collateral publicity for the 2017 Vista Strawberry Festival.

ArtBeat Owner Kait Matthews notes, “The Gallery has sponsored the poster contest since its inception. We enjoy giving back to the community, we are delighted that art is part of the Festival, and we love showcasing local artists.”

Vista resident Alice Picado’s “Strawberries on Main Street” poster of oversized luscious berries being delivered in an old-fashioned pickup truck to downtown Vista won the hearts of the judges in the inaugural poster contest and set the bar high for the annual display. Vista businessman John Alesi captured first place in 2014 with his droll, surrealistic “Straw Man.” Vistan Pamela Becraft’s 2015 first-place whimsical artwork decorates the this year’s advertisement.

Describing each of the three winning posters to date as uniquely delightful and very “Vista” in design, Matthews says, “This year, we hope to see many colorful depictions of the celebration, which harks back to Vista’s history as the self-proclaimed Strawberry Capital of the World.”

ArtBeat on Main Street co-op gallery and wine lounge is located at 330 Main Street in downtown Vista. It is open Tuesday–Saturday, 11:00am-9:30pm. To learn about gallery partnering opportunities, including space rentals, email info@artbeatonmainstreet.com.
