Vivid Views – paintings by Cathy Carey at Encinitas City Hall - Reception June 12 - 5-7pm

At the “Vivid Views” show, Cathy Carey will be displaying works from several series of colorful California scenes.

The reception will be June 12 from 5 to 7pm.  Her current series includes native animals like owls, bobcats, quail, coyotes and fox, many of which she has seen on her one acre property on a high hill overlooking Lake Hodges. She says,“I love painting the animals I see in the area, we are all part of the interdependent pattern of our shared coexistence.” From bright mid day, sunset, twilight, and the dark sky, she sees these animals, and draws inspiration to paint them in their natural state.

The paintings that will be displayed include costal, and inland scenes. For example, in one of her featured paintings, “Swami’s Agave” you’ll see the surf of Encinitas and an agave in the foreground. An interesting thing about this painting and a few others, is that she paints words in, relating to the image. In the waves hitting the shore you’ll be able to spot the word “swami’s” disguised as a darker shade in the wave. This is a personal touch Carey has been applying to her paintings recently. In another painting, “Surf Sup”, with it’s clever name relating to supper, you’ll see a Pelican flying over the coast, of the Encinitas Beaches to find it’s next meal.

The Contemporary Expressive Colorist style of Cathy Carey is a blend of impressionist brush strokes, vivid expressive color and symbolic images that impart a sense of emotion and mood. Cathy Carey’s oil paintings are more than the reality of description and instead create images that feel joyous and exhilarating because of their bright and invigorating colors. She says, “I want to create movement in my compositions so I combine colors and shapes to make it feel like the pulse between the music and dancers. I paint scenes of places that I love, the California coast and inland North County is one of the most beautiful places in the world.”

E101 Gallery to Host “Fantastic Aspect” Exhibition by Patricia Lizon

The E101 Gallery will feature artist Patricia Lizon’s “Fantastic Aspect” exhibition of surreal abstract cartoons from January 28 to February 26. These boldly colored, limited edition archival prints bring to life "characters" who sometimes emote alone or interact with others. Each image creates a subliminal psychological space which is primal. What occurs is intuitively recognizable as universal and organic; felt in the body. The artist begins by clearing her mind and making honest automatic writings; many line drawings in quick succession, unconscious of intent. After such a session, only those marks which speak to an emotional space are retained and scanned into Photoshop where the mood is elaborated with the addition of color and textures. The viewer is invited to bring his/her life to interact with the art and come to personal conclusions regarding the primitive narrative depicted which is nebulous as the last dream which fades as one wakes. Occasionally, words are included to indicate what the "characters" say to the artist.

Patricia is a graduate of San Diego State in Painting and Printmaking and has worked as a freelance Graphic Designer. In the past, she has been in numerous group shows in San Diego and Seattle, more recently was a featured artist for Gap Toothed Madness Online Gallery and was Woman’s Caucus of the Arts San Diego first place winner of the online exhibit “Express Yourself”.

Opening Reception will be held on Thursday, February 5 from 5pm-8pm during the First Thursdays event at the E101 Gallery (818 S. Coast Hwy 101). Free light refreshments. Come one and all!

Dogs, Dancers & Dazzlers with Darlene Katz at E101 Gallery, August 7

Encinitas 101 Mainstreet Association presents "Dancers, Dogs, and other Dazzlers", a solo exhibition by local artist Darlene Katz. This exhibit combines her series of paintings of dancers and dogs and other things beginning with "D" (warning: if you try hard enough, everything can begin with D), highlighting her extensive work capturing unique moments in time, ranging from thought provoking to just plain comedic.

An artist Reception will be held on Thursday, August 7 , 5:30-8:00 pm at the Encinitas 101 Mainstreet Association offices located at 818 S. Coast Hwy 101. The public is invited to the reception which will take place during the First Thursdays in Encinitas event in August, with free light refreshments and wonderful art. The show runs from July 31 through Sept 11, 2014.
Darlene Katz is an award winning artist, born and raised in Syracuse, NY, now based in Southern California. Darlene's award winning work is displayed in Southern California galleries and national juried shows, as well as in private and corporate collections. Darlene's inspiration comes from her travels as well as everyday scenes. She has created a series of oil paintings for each subject she paints, which highlight her versatility with color and value, as well as subject matter. To this end, Darlene paints landscapes, figures and portraits, as well as animals and still life. She enjoys being technically proficient without losing the freshness of her painting, no matter what the subject. She does not limit herself to one particular approach in her paintings, but her unique style is recognizable in all of her work.

Please contact Darlene Katz for more information. Phone: 760-635-2585, email: darlene@studiokatz.com or website: www.studiokatz.com.
